PROJECT OVERVIEW

Heirs property can occur when property is not probated after the death of an owner, creating issues with multiple generations owning land as tenants in common.  This can create problems when utilizing the land for residential or agricultural uses.  Although strategies exist to resolve and clear up titles, these avenues might not always be the soundest.  Students on this project would provide research related to heirs’ property issues so that the team could consider new potential outcomes and strategies that could be used to clarify the title.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

As a successful scholar, you will be an integral part of a collaborative team based at University Maryland – College Park and West Virginia University. Together, we will delve into legal decisions and legislative changes that impact heirs’ property regionally and nationally. Your role will involve working closely with faculty at UMCP and WVU, attending virtual meetings with Extension faculty, and engaging with other experts in agriculture and the environment.  The project will also include visits to operations to gain a deeper understanding of their common agricultural law issues and the impacts on heirs’ property. Your work on this project will contribute to our research and provide opportunities for future authorship on conference presentations, journal articles, and Extension publications.
