The Edward & Jennifer St. John Center for Translational Engineering and Medicine is led by Giuliano Scarcelli, co-director and associate professor in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at UMCP (left), and Osamah J. Saeedi, clinical co-director and professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at UMSOM and MPower Professor
Mission: The Bioengineering (BIOE) + Medicine collaboration unites two prominent strengths at the University of Maryland to accelerate the transformation of solutions to problems in medicine and healthcare.
About
A joint, cross-disciplinary and cross-institution initiative between two University of Maryland assets — the Fischell Department of Bioengineering within the A. James Clark School of Engineering and the University of Maryland School of Medicine – connects medicine and engineering to transform healthcare by developing solutions to problems in medicine.
Bioengineering and Medicine faculty, staff and students are now integrated in the new Edward and Jennifer St. John Center for Translational Engineering and Medicine (CTEM) in co-located laboratory and office space at the 4MLK Laboratory and Office building at the University of Maryland BioPark in Baltimore. The new Center, launched with a $10 million gift from the Edward & Jennifer St. John Foundation, creates a unique environment for the education of students, the discovery of healthcare innovations, and the translation to patients through clinical practice.
MPower Support
Since 2012, MPower has supported numerous collaborations between the two disciplines, and through its current, transformational funding, it will support:
- Customized programming, design, and fit-out of the state-of-the-art, office/laboratory space to house CTEM
- Academic enrichment and educational programing including the development of a new BS-to-MD degree; a Joint Graduate Fellowship in Bioengineering; a Bioengineering Capstone design course; and other clinical experiences for undergraduates
- Faculty recruitment and seed funding for faculty within CTEM
Current Research Areas
- Developing new immunotherapy strategies to treat cancer, multiple sclerosis and other diseases at mucosal surfaces
- Improving efficacy of cancer treatments through light activation
- Advancing detection of cancer and other diseases through advanced imaging and AI-based techniques
- Exploring new tissue engineering and preservation techniques to expand organ donations
- Revolutionizing ophthalmology diagnostics and refractive surgery with biomechanical microscopy
