Center for Brain Health and Human Performance
Mission: To create a cutting-edge center focused on the advanced study of the brain and nervous system. New research collaborations will explore the neurobiology of aging and age-related neurodegeneration.
The new Center at the renovated Cole Field House – the first shared research facility created by the strategic partnership – brings together leading researchers in neuroscience, genomics, biomechanics, and other fields. Researchers are examining innovative techniques and approaches that link UMB’s strengths in TBI and spinal injury with UMCP’s strengths in complementary areas in computer science, engineering, physics, and biology. An adjacent orthopedic center is expected to bring leading-edge medical facilities to UMCP, allowing for the rapid translation of research into practice.
High-potential joint UMB and UMCP teams received seed funding to spark new research in novel approaches to head injury, including functional mapping of brain activity, spinal cord injury repair, and the effect of TBI on human genes and microbes. The research stimulates the submission of proposals to federal, public, and private funding agencies.
The center’s research program is expected to occupy space in the renovated Cole Field House at UMCP.
