Program Requirements
Duration:
- 10-weeks / 400-hours, full-time commitment from May 26, 2026-July 31, 2026.
- Work is expected to be conducted during typical business hours (e.g., Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM).
- Adjustments to the project timeline are acceptable, but only if mutually agreed upon by student and mentor.
- The schedule should be discussed during the interview process so there is no misunderstanding as to the commitment. Any planned absences should also be addressed during the interview process. Final decisions regarding scheduling and attendance rest with the mentor.
Location:
The UM Scholars program was designed to connect students to faculty mentors at the opposite campus, allowing the student to experience that campus. Thus, research is designed to be conducted on-site at UMB, UMCP, or at the MDH. This has evolved post-pandemic, however, and the project may be completed in person, remotely, or a hybrid version, at the mentor’s discretion. To honor the spirit of MPower’s inter-campus experience, please make every effort to have the student come to campus during some part of the program.
Student Payments:
Students are paid a stipend per their academic rank. The stipend is paid in two installments over the 10-week period, once at the midpoint of the program, and once at the conclusion of the program.
- Undergraduate Students: $5,500
- Graduate Students: $6,500
Travel/Parking:
Travel to and parking at UMB, UMCP, or MDH are the responsibility of the student. The stipend supports travel and parking.
UM Scholars may be eligible for discounted student parking rates, depending on the location of assignment at UMB or UMCP. Mentors are encouraged to contact Adrianne Arthur, who can help understand options and connect to appropriate parties.
Attendance Guidance:
MPower does not require timesheets; however, we ask that you ensure that students have adequate workload to reach weekly requirements of 40-hours per week.
Mentors who wish to implement time tracking (timecards) for their own oversight or to help ensure alignment with program expectations are welcome to do so.
