The University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State (MPower)

The University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State (MPower) is an innovative, structured collaboration between the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP), two of the state’s leading public research institutions.

Launched in 2012, MPower strengthens and serves Maryland by advancing interdisciplinary research, fostering innovation, and addressing the state’s most critical challenges. The partnership leverages the world-class strengths of both universities to drive economic growth, enhance education, and create transformative impact across the state. Through collaboration, MPower delivers on its vision of innovation and impact for Maryland and its citizens.

Implementation of the Strategic Partnership Act of 2016

The University of Maryland Strategic Partnership Act of 2016 strengthened and formalized the structured relationship between UMB and UMCP, enhancing the alliance that drives transformative impact at the two campuses, far surpassing what each institution could do independently of each other to advance education and research.

In addition to formalizing the structure, the law led to more alignment and coordination and created two new centers based at UMB and UMCP: the Center for Maryland Advanced Ventures and the University of Maryland Center for Economic and Entrepreneurship Development
