2025: Academic and Research Opportunities for Students
Russell Brinsfield Internship Program (ALEI)
The Russell Brinsfield Internship Program is a collaboration between the Hughes Center and the University of Maryland Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI). The internship program, which began in 2017, engages an undergraduate student from the University of Maryland College of AGNR and a law student enrolled at the Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, who work together to develop viable solutions to a variety of complex environmental, agricultural and forestry-related issues.
Bioengineering Capstone Design Course
UMCP undergraduates team with faculty physicians at UMB to experience the robust link between engineering and human health first-hand. Direct exposure to the medical field, clinical settings, and the direct application of medical devices in a hospital setting offers students the ability to engineer their designs from concept to product.
Joint Graduate Fellowship in Bioengineering
A Joint Graduate Fellowship in Bioengineering spans both institutions and offers students an opportunity to create and deliver engineering solutions to challenging, clinical problems related to medicine, pharmacy, or dentistry.
Master of Science in Law
Launched in 2015, the program targets working professionals in private, government, and not-for-profit fields involving extensive regulation where legal knowledge can advance their careers. Taught in-person at University of Maryland, College Park or online by faculty from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law at UMB, the MSL program provides students the ability to earn degrees on a part-time basis.
MLAW: Undergraduate Programs in Law
The MLAW Undergraduate Programs in Law offered at College Park is one of the first and now the longest continuing collaborative education program between UMCP and UMB through MPower. The programming gives students early exposure to ideas, mentors, and professional opportunities in law not normally available to undergraduates.
Policing Partnership: Master of Professional Studies in Public Safety Leadership and Administration
Created in 2020 in response to an overwhelming need for advanced training in leadership, policy, and law for first responders, personnel in law enforcement, social services, and other public safety professions. Developed by faculty from UMCP’s College of Behavioral and Social Sciences’ departments of sociology, criminology, and criminal justice, and UMB’s Francis King Carey School of Law, the program is now in its third year.
UM Scholars: Cross-Campus Summer Research
UM Scholars is a mentored educational program that connects students from UMB and UMCP to faculty mentors at the opposite campus to work on research projects designed to expand students’ knowledge and enlighten students about career choices.
University of Maryland Center for Economic and Entrepreneurship Development (UMCEED)
Established by law in 2016, UMCEED increases workforce readiness by creating educational degree programs in high-impact fields such as neuroscience, virtual and augmented reality, biomedical devices, data analytics, cybersecurity, quantum technologies, advanced data computing, and information technologies.
