Imagine a health care plan designed not just for your condition, but your environment.
Olohitare “Abby” Abaku, an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland School of Public Health and a student researcher in MPower’s 2025 Summer UM Scholars program, is studying how geolocation data, like proximity to grocery stores, clinics, and community resources, can help clinicians tailor diabetes care to patients’ individualized environments and help inform policies that promote health equity.
Building on a mentorship with Rozalina McCoy, MD, a faculty member at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of the Population Health Research Program at the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing, Abby was one of more than 50 participants in the MPower-sponsored UM Scholars program, which ran from late May to early August 2025. The program connects undergraduates from the University of Maryland, College Park to faculty mentors and research experiences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
